Maintenance Announcements

Service–impacting maintenance announcements will be made on this page. If maintenance is considered potentially disruptive, announcements will be emailed to the contact address of affected accounts. Results of maintenance will also be announced here. For questions regarding maintenance and upgrades, email webmaster@pacific.net or call (707) 463-8214.

2017.11.21—Hardware Upgraded

The addition of some hard drives to our VoIP server required a reboot to activate. The impromptu downtime was four and a half minutes, roughly around 8:30 PM. Care was taken to ensure no calls were active.

2017.09.19—Certificate Updated

The certificate for securepacific.net has been updated. It uses a new issuer, and has a SHA-256 fingerprint of:

4F:C7:1F:F1:6B:B6:30:A0:0E:E2:DB:04:EC:3E:AD:BD:7C:B9:CF:FA:8D:11:F2:95:EB:03:B2:A1:AB:AC:80:F5

All maintenance has been completed successfully.

2017.09.13—Pending Maintenance

General system and security updates will be applied, necessitating reboots. All hosting and email services will affected, as well as other public services such as our website, dial-up, etc. The expected downtime for any one service is less than 15 minutes. Maintenance will take place Thursday evening, September 14, 2017.

2017.04.07—Maintenance Complete

All scheduled maintenance has been completed. Whole-system upgrades happened to be published the same day, causing the process to take longer than expected.

2017.04.05—Pending Maintenance

General system and security updates will be applied, necessitating reboots. All hosting and email services will affected, as well as other public services such as our website, dial-up, etc. The expected downtime for any one service is less than 15 minutes. Maintenance will take place Thursday evening, April 6, 2017.

Hosting servers will also have PHP bumped to the latest point release, 5.6.30. This is a significant release because it marks the end of bugfixes to the 5.6 series, which will continue to receive security fixes until 2019. See the Supported Versions page on PHP's website for more information. This an informational notice only—bumping point releases is considered low-risk, and not normally mentioned in maintenance announcements.

2017.03.14—New Outgoing Server

A new server has been deployed, smtp.pacific.net. We have tried to maintain as much backwards compatibility with the previous outgoing server as possible, but a perfect 1-1 transition is not only impossible, but undesirable (why else we would we bother making such a significant change?). The new server is a dedicated mail submission server running the Exim MTA. The previous outgoing server was also our primary backend mail server, running the Sendmail MTA. If you experience issues you believe related to this transition, please contact support@pacific.net or give us a call at (707) 463-8214.

2016.10.04—Maintenance Update

Servers hosting various websites have been restarted in order to apply system updates. This took place at approximately 19:30 and 20:30. No site should have been unavailable for more than 15 minutes.

2016.10.03—Ongoing Maintenance

Throughout the week, we will be performing a variety of maintenance tasks. Impact to customer services is expected to be largely unnoticeable. If any updates, upgrades, repairs, etc., cannot be expected to happen without disruption, advance notice will be posted to this page. "Disruptive" is considered greater than 1 minute of downtime during peak hours or 5 minutes during non-peak hours.

2016.06.09—Maintenance Complete

All maintenance has been completed successfully. We apologize for the inconvenience of having mail unavailable during normal business hours, and appreciate your understanding of our need to perform critical repairs.

2016.06.08—Hardware Maintenance

A failed disk drive in a mail server is being replaced. Mail will be unavailable for a period this afternoon/evening on 2016.06.09, during the day. Downtime is expected to be brief (less than 15 minutes) at least 30 minutes, but may be longer.

2016.05.11—Maintenance Complete

All maintenance has been completed successfully. All affected websites should be fully functional; please contact webmaster@pacific.net if yours is not. Downtime for mail was longer than expected; users may have experienced intermittent authentication issues when accessing their mailboxes during the wee hours.

2016.05.09—Hardware Maintenance

We will be performing network and hardware maintenance and upgrades, beginning Tuesday night, May 10, 2016, at approximately 10:00 (PM). A number of websites will be unavailable for a significant period of time; owners of affected sites have already been notified. While those sites are down, visitors will be redirected to a maintenance page. Some Pacific Internet services may experience brief interruptions as well, including mail. Prolonged downtime is not expected, and should be less than 15 minutes per affected service.

2015.12.11—Maintenance Complete

The hosting server undergoing filesystem maintenance required a forced reboot. Unfortunately, the machine is at a remote location, and the datacenter has been slow in pressing the button. Hopefully it will be turned back on soon; we apologize for the inconvenience. UPDATE: It's back on.

All other maintenace has been completed successfully.

2015.12.08—Pending Maintenance

General and security maintenance updates will be applied, and in most cases will necessitate a reboot. Expected downtime is less than 15 minutes per service. To minimize potential interruptions due to downtime while rebooting, maintenance will take place at night, Thursday, December 10, 2015.

Some hosting services are being given special attention this time. A shared hosting server will be taken offline for filesystem maintenance. Downtime for this service may last up to an hour. Domains hosted on the following IPs will be affected:

  • 198.20.124.226
  • 198.20.124.228
  • 198.20.124.229

Also, some hosting MySQL database users will be converted from old-style to new-style passwords, with some other minor cleanup. There should be no discernable impact from this change. See the IP list below for the IPs of domains who may be affected (there are only a few users to convert).

Routine maintenance will be performed on most of our servers. Some servers will be rebooted for additional network maintenance, which will temporarily affect some services. Maintenance will take place late on 2015.05.14 to avoid interruptions during peak usage. The expected downtime for any single service is less than 15 minutes.

2015.03.10—Certificate Upgrades Finished

The same certificate from previous maintenance has now been installed on the remaining mail services that were not previously updated.

2015.02.26—Certificate Upgrade Complete

A new certificate was installed for mail services. The new common names are:

  • mail.pacific.net
  • smtp.pacific.net
  • imap.pacific.net
  • pop3.pacific.net

This should allow for greater interopability with various mail clients and devices. Make sure your root CAs are up–to–date. The root certificate for the new mail cert can be found here.

2015.01.29—Maintenance Complete

All maintenance successfully completed.

2015.01.28—Pending Maintenance

Security updates will be applied to address the GHOST vulnerability. This will require rebooting most servers, so brief downtime for most services is expected. Expected downtime is less than 15 minutes. Maintenance will occur late at night to minimize any interruptions. Some network maintenance will also be performed.

To help customers avoid interruptions, a timetable is provided for when each service is due to go down. All times given are for the early morning of Thursday, January 29.
