Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the minimum requirements for Pacific.Net?

Windows 95 or later, MacOS 8.1*or higher, RAM: Minimum 32MB; 1GB or higher recommended. Pacific Internet does not supply the required software because all modern operating systems have dialers and web browsers. The only reason some ISPs supply CDs is that they want to target you with third party ads. (read the fine print!)

Please note: Systems not included above such as Unix, Linux or Internet appliances may be used to access your account but we cannot offer tech support of any kind other than the basic configuration settings which can be found on our homepage under the Support link.

    • Incoming - mail.pacific.net
      Supports POP3 (port 110), POP3S (port 995)
We recommend all customers use POP3S for encrypted (secure) mail transport.

    • Outgoing - mail.pacific.net

We recommend all customers use TLS(SSL) for encrypted (secure) mail transport.

    • External Outgoing* - smtp.pacific.net
(requires authentication) on ports 25, 587 and 2525.
*used by customers who connect to the Internet via another ISP or are roaming, on vacation, etc.
We recommend all customers use TLS(SSL) for encrypted (secure) mail transport.

Pacific Internet urges you to use secure communications channels whenever possible.

  • Where is dialup networking in windows 7?

    • Enter the following information:
Settings for Internet Connection in Windows 7
      • Dial-up phone number = _________ (this is the number your computer dials to connect to the Internet)
      • User name = _________ (this is always all lower-case letters)
      • Password = _________ (this is case-sensitive)
      • Make sure Remember this password is checked.
      • Connection name = Pacific
      • If your computer is set up for multiple users, make sure Allow other people to use this connection is checked. If you are the only user, it may be left blank.
      • If, during this setup process, Windows says it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
    • When all the information is entered, press Connect. Windows will immediately try to test the connection. If it is unsuccessful, be sure to click Set up the connection anyway, then click Close on the next screen.
    • At this point, your connection should be set up.
  • How do I change my username or password?

Call Pacific.Net during business hours, or else you may send email to support@pacific.net. We will ask for personal information to verify that you have authorization to change a password or username.
  • What is the best way to send large files & photos?

Email is limited to about 30 mb in size. Larger files will be rejected by the mail server. If you need to transfer larger files, please use another method, or compress (zip) the files. There are many ways to transfer large files. You can open a personal website and upload files there via ftp, or use instant messaging software to send large files directly to another user on the Internet. There are also some sites that allow file sharing for free. Search for "free online file storage".
  • How do I check my E-mail or send E-mail when I am away from home?

Webmail. Many customers use it as their main email client, since it's always available from any internet connection.

  • Getting spam "from" your own email address?

You may have recently seen numerous spam emails that appear to be coming from your address.
Users who have our free Anti-spam service, Postini, have seen a spike in such emails in their Postini Message Centers lately.
There is no cause for alarm. This is simply an old spammer trick.
What the spammers do is copy the To address to the From field so it looks like it came from your address.
Just as you can enter any return address on regular mail, you can do the same with email, whether or not the address is legitimate.
It does not indicate that anyone has hacked or is using your account or your address and others are not getting spam that appears to have come from you.
In all likelihood, they are probably getting spam with their own reply address.
If you have been the recipient of such spam and Postini is catching it, you need not worry further and you don't even have to delete it from Postini if you don't want to bother. Postini is doing its job and after 14 days the spam will be deleted automatically.
If you do not have Postini and you are getting these in your Inbox, email support@pacific.net and request that we add Postini spam filtering to your account. It is free for all pacific.net addresses, including domain addresses that are hosted here.
If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact support@pacific.net and we will be glad to help you.
  • Can't see graphics & images in Webmail?

Click the message so that you are viewing it. Above the body of the email, click the link that says View Unsafe
Images. The graphics will then load. If the sender is someone trusted, in the same area of the screen, you can
then click on the Always trust images from this sender link.
If you do not want the image blocking, it can be completely disabled:
    1. At the top of the screen, click the Options button, then click
      Unsafe Image Rules.
    2. Check the top box, which says Trust all sources then click Save to
      save your changes.
  • Does Pacific.Net support 56k and V.92?

    Yes, on all dialup lines.
  • What is Postini?

Pacific Internet offers spam and virus email filtering through a third-party service called Postini. Postini works by screening all incoming mail from outside pacific.net.* This is done by machine, not humans, so your privacy is not an issue. Mail that appears suspicious or contains a virus will be quarantined by Postini. Quarantined mail is held in a Message Center on the Postini servers. Each main address that is covered by Postini has its own Message Center. You will view the Message Center through a website address, accessed by your email address and password. In your Message Center you will see a list of messages and you may select any of them to be delivered by simply check-marking the message and clicking Deliver. Messages that contain viruses are also here but are in a separate list, in red, at the top of the list of quarantined mail. These messages can be safely viewed and read in the Message Center without risking infection. Since Postini filters are machine-driven, you may find that legitimate mail is being quarantined along with junkmail. Postini has an Approved Senders list and a Blocked Senders list that can be used to make sure mail from a specific address is always delivered to your Inbox or conversely mail that you do not want delivered is always Blocked. It is important to check your Message Center frequently to make sure you are getting the mail you do want to receive. When you delete messages from the Message Center they go to a Trash folder so if you change your mind, you can go to the Trash folder and deliver a message from there. You cannot delete mail from the Trash folder but it's not necessary to do so; Postini automatically deletes all mail in your Message Center after it is 14 days old. Postini also has adjustable filter settings and categories to help you make it work best for your needs. If you would like to add Postini please contact billing@pacific.net. Postini cannot filter mail from other pacific.net addresses; such mail never leaves our server so it cannot be screened. For this reason we recommend that you also have your own anti-virus software installed on your computer and you keep it updated for complete protection.

  • Why do I get slow connect/download speeds?

Sometimes there are other devices on the same line that cause problems. Try removing all other devices from the phone line and see if the condition improves. Unfortunately, the vast majority of slow connection speeds are a reflection of the quality of the phone lines in your area. The phone company only guarantees a data transfer rate of 9600bps, so if you are connecting below the top speed of your modem and your modem configurations are correct, there is not much else you can do to improve the speed. Our tech support staff may also be able to assist you with a custom modem setting. Contact support@pacific.net for more information.
